Practice CommentaryThis passage taken from Denton Welchs Maiden Voyage, introduces thereaders to the main fictional font (whose name is not mentioned) in a placethat is not well known to the main mention. Through the use offoreshadowing, symbolism, effective setting and characterization the generator is able to successfully display a situation where anadolescents rebelliousness leads him into trouble and unexpected items.This passage begins with one of the characters, Mr. Butler, tellingthe main character, Foreigners ar not very popular here. This veryfirst line of the passage acts as a great opening sentence as itforeshadows the horrifying event that follows and it sets up theominous and menacing mood of the passage. However this sentence iswritten so that it is an understatement and thus even though it stillforeshadows the event that follows in a subtle way, it does notdecrease the effect of that event has on the readers. If theforeshadowing had been made more obvious like, Don t go outside orelse they will kill you. then the readers would not be so surprisedwhen the identity of the inclination found by the main character isrevealed and when the main character finds himself trapped.The author also uses symbolism in order to reveal the identity of the target area found by the main character. It is first mentioned as a unappeasablespeck and because the color black is usually associated with deathand evil it catches the readers attention and arouses suspicion. Nextas the main character gets closer to the object he wonders, if itcould be a cat crouching in the middle of the road, or even a darkboulder. By this time the readers are sure that the object beingmentioned is going to be an unusual yet scary thing because it isbeing compared to a black cat (which is seen as an omen) and a boulder(which is seen as an obstacle in ones path).The most important aspect of this passage is its setting as throughthe setting, the situation of the main character feeling impr isoned inthe villa and then becoming trapped is made to seem morerealistic and is also made easier to imagine. In the starting thevilla in which the main character is staying is express to be surroundedby poplar trees that are tall and thin and are planted in straightlines. This gives the readers the feeling that these trees act asbarriers between the villa and the Chinese city that lies outside andmaybe even guards the people living inside the villa from the outsidedangers. Genetic Testing Genetic screening uses a variety of science laboratory procedures to find out if a person has a genetic condition or disorder or is likely to develop a disease base on his or her genetic makeup. Individuals may wish to be tested if the family shows a history of one specific disease such as Huntingtons ailment or breast cancer, if they show symptoms of a genetic disorder which could be improved by early diagnosis, or if they are planning a family and are cin one caserned about the possibility of passing on a genetic trait to their offspring. This last type of screening can look at the parents genetic constitution or look at the genotype of the fetus or newborn. This type of screening can also look for a specific disorder or can be done as a general test for plebeian disorders as in prenatal testing or more normally newborn screening. Genetic tests use techniques to examine genes or markers near the genes. Direct testing for diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and Sic kle Cell Anemia let from an analysis of an individuals specific genes. A technique called linkage analysis, or indirect testing, is used when the gene cannot be directly identified but can be located within a specific region of a chromosome. This testing requires additional DNA from an affected family member for comparison. Because each persons DNA is unique (except for alike twins), genetic tests also can be used for individual identification (DNA fingerprinting). This technique is often used in forensic work, where samples from a crime scene such as blood or semen could be used as incriminating or acquitting evidence. Genetic testing is a complex process, and the results depend both on reliable laboratory procedures and an accurate translation of results. Tests also vary in sensitivity, that is, their ability to happen mutations or to detect all patients who have or will develop the disease. Interpretation of test results are often complex even for trained physicians and other health deal out specialists. Wrestling has changed in many ways since it was done at carnivals and under the great big tents, but you will never hear any complaints from me.

Part 1 Identifying a Technology for Classroom UseThis weeks task is to identify a technology for classroom usage that will improve students learning, make curriculum more meaningful and provide opportunities for my students to actively engage with technology in a meaningful way. My classroom has a Smart Board that was installed in the spring of 2011. It is wonderful for displaying information, taking notes, showing videos and photos that relate to the curriculum. However, students have a more limited interaction with it as a direct learning tool. I would have to admit that it is more a t apieceer centered tool than it is a student centered custom of technology. After researching the Smart Boards available resources and tools, I found the technology that I would like to incorporate in my classroom.
